Biography
Trombonist Joseph W. Frye is beginning his third season as Principal Trombone with the Midland-Odessa Symphony &
Chorale and also serves as the trombonist with the Lone Star Brass, a professional brass quintet based in
Midland-Odessa, Texas. In addition to maintaining a private low brass studio, he is also plays trombone and
euphonium with the 572nd Air National Guard Band of the Smoky Mountains, where he holds the rank of Staff Sergeant
and is the current trombone soloist.
Joseph holds a Doctor of Music degree with an emphasis in Trombone Performance from The Florida State University
in Tallahassee, Florida. He also earned the Master of Music degree in Trombone Performance from The Florida State
University, and a Bachelor of Music degree from The University of Tennessee at Knoxville
Joseph's primary trombone instructors are Dr. John Drew of The Florida State University and the Tallahassee Symphony
Orchestra, Professor Don Hough of The University of Tennessee at Knoxville and former Principal Trombone of The
Knoxville Symphony Orchestra. He has also studied with Lawrence Borden of The Blair School of Music at Vanderbilt
University, and Brad Kinney.
When not playing the trombone, Joseph's hobbies include arranging, cooking, drinking fine wine, and spending time with his lovely wife Christa and their white, copper-eyed Persian cat named Socrates.
